Idris Khan: After… Bach’s Cello Suites

Idris Khan’s acclaimed practice uses a range of media – from photography to sculpture, painting and moving-image – to explore the intersections of time, memory and the layering of personal and collective experience.

After… Bach’s Cello Suites superimposes and obscures the scores of Johann Sebastian Bach’s six Cello Suites (1717–23) into a large-scale monochromatic artwork. Using musical notation as its raw material, the work transforms the textures of time – its rhythms, tempos and disharmonies – into a physical form of cumulative experience.
