Gillian Wearing: Dancing in Peckham
For over 20 years Gillian Wearing has been a leading figure in British contemporary art. Known for her unflinching approach to photography and video, her conceptually driven work records the power dynamics and voyeurism present in everyday life.
Dancing in Peckham (1994) documents the artist dancing inside The Aylesham Centre in Peckham (a glass-ceiling shopping arcade visible in the immediate skyline towards the city). Shot in 1994 on a camcorder, the looping 25-minute video marks the first time Wearing appeared as a subject in one of her works, a practice that has since defined her career.
